CLARENCE KING : PAINTER
Paintings by Clarence King
CLARENCE'S BIOGRAPHY
Clarence King lives and paints in Cambridge, New York, He studied studio art and painting at New York University and at the State  University of New York at Albany. Clarence paints oil landscapes of the  Hudson River valley and of rural upstate Washington County.

These recent landscape paintings are an attempt to make iconic images of the agricultural terrain of upstate New York. The subject matter is the ever changing weather, seasons, crops, and foliage and the geometries imposed on the land by generations of farming. The challenge is to depict these phenomena in an evocative and skillful way.

The still life paintings are of a few simple objects arranged on a table or reflective surface. Through careful observation and rendering, I try to elevate these mundane objects into something transcendent.

POTTERY BY DAVID FRANK : PAINTINGS BY JIM ST. CLAIR

October 17 to November 2, 2008

JIM ST. CLAIR : PAINTER
PAINTER'S STATEMENT
For the past 20 years I have painted on a small workboat around the edges of New York harbor. I was drawn to the derelict overgrown industrial remains that, until recently ringed the city. Their silent isolation speaks volumes of other eras, histories and people long gone. The combination of industrial decay and encroaching irrepressible nature is a fluctuating blend of melancholia and hopefulness. Painting out there is a good excuse to spend a lot of time in a boat.

DAVID FRANK : POTTER
POTTER'S STATEMENT
I have made vessel forms out of clay, since 1969. The pieces that I design vary from the dishes you use, to the sink you wash in, to the vase that holds your flowers. It is my goal to have my pieces enrich your life everyday! I see my work as a narrative that speaks to you. Over the past five years, I have been busy introducing new glazes on to my pieces. I have my own gallery in North Guilford, which I use to display my work.

Pottery by Victoria Bengolea and Paintings by Raphael Bueno

May 9 through 25, 2008

Victoria BengoleaBorn in Argentina, Victoria lives in Paris since 1979 where she currently pursues her work.  Victoria also teaches throwing and conducts research in high temperature gazes.  She studies ceramics at the Institut de la Céramique Française, in Sèvres, France, as well as throwing with Thierry FOUQUET, Sèvres. Victoria participates in Barbara Wright's summer workshops on Shelter Island, New York.

POTTER'S STATEMENT:
"I produce containers aiming at simplicity and beauty as well as conformity to function and form.

I am constantly amazed by the depth, dimension and wealth of high temperature glazes.  This is the field I work in following consistently the teachings and discoveries of Frere Daniel de Montmollin.  Glazes go well beyond a color simply determined by its pigment; it resides at a level of surprise and fascination.

Containers are an exchange medium to receive and offer; they blend into our daily life with innumerable repeat uses that trivialize them.  Despite this, they have always attracted me.  In fact, to such an extent that each day I feel the urge to manipulate and re-appropriate them over again.  And as I re-discover them, I am both the technician and a spectator of the pieces I create. So, I need to communicate and share these thrills."

Victoria's work is permanently displayed in her workshop in Paris.  She exhibited on various occasions at:
   Shelter Island Pottery
Ferme sur Grand Val, Sucy en Brie, France
   Galerie Artedomus, Vincennes, France
   Galerie Colline Fortier, Paris
   Pro Loco, Recco, Italy
